Apple Might Be Making the iPad Mini More Durable — And That’s Great News

Apple

If you’ve ever had your heart sink watching your tablet fall near water, Apple might have something in the works to ease that panic. According to a new report, the next iPad mini could be getting a design upgrade that makes it more water-resistant — a feature that’s long overdue.

A Splash-Proof iPad Mini Could Be Coming

Bloomberg reports that Apple is working on a new casing for the iPad mini that would help protect it from water. While it’s not confirmed yet, the idea is to make it more like the iPhone, which already has solid water resistance. That means you might be able to use your iPad mini more confidently in places like the kitchen, coffee shop, or even by the pool.

One of the clever changes Apple is reportedly testing involves the speaker system. Instead of traditional speaker holes, the new iPad mini might use vibration-based technology. That would eliminate openings where water could sneak in — without sacrificing sound quality.

Interestingly, Apple’s approach here is different from how it protects iPhones. iPhones use adhesives and gaskets to seal speaker holes. But for the iPad mini, Apple seems to be rethinking the internal layout entirely, which could also make repairs easier down the line.

The Current iPad Mini Isn’t Water-Resistant — Yet

Right now, the iPad mini doesn’t have any official water-resistance rating. So if you own one, you’ll want to keep it far away from spills and splashes. A little water can cause big problems.

For comparison, iPhones have an IP68 rating, meaning they can survive being underwater up to six meters for 30 minutes. It’s unclear if the iPad mini will match that level, but even a basic rating would be a big step forward.

OLED Display and Other Upgrades on the Horizon

Water resistance isn’t the only thing rumored for the next iPad mini. Apple might also be switching to an OLED display, which would offer better colors, deeper blacks, and sharper contrast compared to the current LCD screen.

The new iPad mini is expected to launch in 2026, giving Apple time to fine-tune these upgrades. The last version — the iPad mini 7 — came out in 2024, so fans of the compact tablet are already looking forward to what’s next.

Expect a Price Bump

Of course, new features usually mean a higher price tag. Rumors suggest the next iPad mini could start around $599 — about $100 more than the current model. That might feel steep, but for users who value durability and display quality, it could be worth the investment.

Why Water Resistance Matters

Tech accidents happen. Whether it’s a spilled drink or a rainy day, water damage is one of the most common reasons people end up needing repairs. So having built-in protection is a smart move.

Even with water resistance, it’s always best to keep your devices away from moisture. But knowing your iPad mini has an extra layer of defense? That’s peace of mind.

Apple seems to be refining the iPad mini to better suit modern lifestyles — combining portability, performance, and now, durability. And that’s something we can all appreciate.
